The last Grande Cantoria is back
Venice. Fifteen years have passed since the Grande Cantoria of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco was rediscovered at the Chiesa della Misericordia. All the parts of this dramatic but movable music apparatus, designed by Pietro Fossati in 1789 and able to host 40 musicians, were randomly stored there during 1927, and then forgotten for a long time. In 1998 a monk recognized a capital and an emblem of San Rocco in that mess of dusty wooden pieces and advised the authority. So the Cantoria had been move back to San Rocco and here the long restoration process began.
Today at 5.30 pm, 85 years after the last concert and 500,000 euro spent for the recovery, the big Cantoria will sound again, at San Rocco church, hosting musicians from Teatro La Fenice.
