Art Basel 2014: Rosemarie Trockel and the fear factor

Two years after Rosemarie Trockel’s solo retrospective at The Serpentine Gallery, where the work was firstly presented, the installation “As far as possible” is still looking for a buyer – currently at Art Basel Unlimited. Elements: a digital print of the iconic “L’origine du monde” by Gustave Courbet where the origin of the world is hidden by the image of a scary hairy tarantula; a plastic palm tree that hangs upside down from the ceiling; three mechanical birds jailed in a white metallic cage – they move and sing when the viewer approaches the cage; a white ceramic receptacle hanging on the wall. Title: “As far as possible”… from what, from the meaning? “No, of course – answers Mr. Dalí – it’s just a surrealistic way to express the fear factor.” That has been a source of inspiration for many artists since ever.
